Mererid Hopwood

Mererid-HopwoodMererid is Cardiff born and bred and has strong family connections in Pembrokeshire. Home however has been Carmarthen for many years. She studied Modern Languages in Aberystwyth and has a PhD in German Literature from University College London. She lectured at Swansea University before leaving to lead the Arts Council of Wales' team in Mid and West Wales. She returned to education and is now Professor in the Faculty of Education and Communities, University of Wales, Trinity Saint David.

She has won the Chair and Crown for poetry at the National Eisteddfod as well as the National Prose Medal. In 2005 she was Bardd Plant Cymru (Children's Laureate for Wales), and in 2011 won the Glyndwr Prize for her contribution to literature in Wales. She has presented television and radio programmes and has published books both for children and adults. She is a board member of Gorsedd y Beirdd and Cymdeithas y Cymod, a fellow of Literature Wales and The Learned Society of Wales and honorary president of Cymdeithas Waldo.
