Performance Spaces

The Donald Gordon Theatre
The main auditorium is named after Donald Gordon, a South African businessman whose remarkable donation represented an enormous contribution to Wales Millennium Centre.
Excellence in acoustics is essential in any lyric theatre. Here in the Donald Gordon Theatre acoustic design has a dual purpose; to ‘fulfil the optimum natural acoustic for opera and to deliver the required acoustic for amplified sound’. Acoustic flexibility demanded by orchestral balance and playing conditions was achieved via moveable surfaces that are ‘sound reflecting, sound absorbing or acoustically transparent’.
The Weston Studio Theatre
The studio is named after the Weston family whose donation enabled the Centre to provide a studio which would also double up as rehearsal space for Welsh National Opera (WNO).
Rehearsal Studios
Each performance and rehearsal space has received a similarly high level of ‘design vigilance’.
