Projects
Prosiect 21
In celebration of our fifth birthday in 2009, we began working with 200 children aged 5 years in Communities First areas all over Wales on a project now known as Prosiect 21. We aim to carry out a project with these children every year until they turn 21 years old; each time introducing a different art form or experience.
The first stage of Prosiect 21, called First Contact, with artist Ann Catrin Evans culminated in the production of the large scale metal sculpture Swirnai (Welsh for Journey) now hanging in our Glanfa foyer space. All children involved created their own unique piece of copper work with Ann and were invited to the Centre in November 2009 to see the final sculpture unveiled.
This year Prosiect 21 continued working with the same 200 pupils in 7 schools across North, Mid and South Wales on an exciting art project with internationally renowned Welsh textile artist Cefyn Burgess www.cefynburgess.co.uk
Cefyn led workshops assisted by a member of the Centre’s L&P team in each school during June and July to produce a Welsh tapestry inspired by the children’s local area. Within each class, every child designed a postcard-sized individual tapestry using Welsh materials. The children had a fantastic time experimenting with different sewing and embellishing machines as part of the process.
Cefyn is now very busy sewing each little tapestry onto a Welsh blanket to create an overall piece of art to be hung in the school for all to enjoy. Designs are personal to the individual school and each child will be able to identify their own design within it.
Everyone is now eagerly awaiting the 7 finished tapestries, which will be unveiled in each school during the autumn term. Parents and fellow pupils will be invited to attend these events.
The Centre will borrow the tapestries in early 2011 for an exhibition. Details coming soon.
Quotes from teachers:
“Each child had a direct experience. Each child’s idea was given a voice, and they were able to see their idea in the finished sculpture. Overall the project was perfect, especially as it continues annually and the projects will develop with the pupils’ age and maturity”
