Vieux Farka Touré + Les Amazones d'Afrique

Vieux Farka Touré + Les Amazones d'Afrique

30 October 2022

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, Bombino will no longer be performing at Llais 2022. Les Amazones d'Afrique will still perform as scheduled, and the line-up will now feature Malian singer and guitarist Vieux Farka Touré. Ticket holders have been contacted by email.

A sublime evening of West African music, with Malian guitarist and singer-songwriter, VIEUX FARKA TOURÉ + the polyrhythmic harmonies of all female supergroup LES AMAZONES D'AFRIQUE.

LES AMAZONES D'AFRIQUE

Opening the evening are Les Amazones d'Afrique, a female collective that has expanded to involve female artists from across Africa and the diaspora.

Formed in Mali by three renowned Malian artists and social change activists, Mamani Keïta, Oumou Sangaré and Mariam Doumbia, their richly melodic and far-ranging music blends pan-African styles and collaborative harmonies with gritty, contemporary pop.

Their debut album 'République Amazone' featured guest contributions from the likes of Angélique Kidjo and Nigerian singer-songwriter Nneka, and caught the attention of President Obama, who included one of the songs in his 20 favourite tracks of 2017.

VIEUX FARKA TOURÉ

Vieux Farka Touré is the son of legendary Malian guitar player and desert blues pioneer Ali Farka Touré. Born in 1981 in Niafunke, Mali, a dusty town on the River Niger about 100 miles south of Timbuktu, Vieux was discouraged by his father from following in his footsteps. Fortunately he ignored paternal advice and took up the guitar, practicing in secret when his father was out of hearing. He may have been self-taught but clearly Vieux inherited something in his DNA.

His self-titled debut album appeared in 2006, and came with Ali’s stamp of approval in the form of a guest appearance, his final recordings before he died. Vieux followed with four more albums extending the boundaries of traditional West African music into new and uncharted territory and earning himself the nickname “the Hendrix of the Sahara”.

2022 has been a busy year for Vieux, releasing his latest album Les Racines in June and collaborating with Khruangbin on Ali, a forthcoming album that pays homage to the work of his father with new interpretations of known highlights and B-sides from his back catalogue.
