Wales Millennium Centre is seeking an artist to direct and co-produce a Christmas cabaret for 2024.
Following an exciting three years of sell-out shows, we’re searching for a collaborator to continue this legacy and facilitate a new team and creative process to lead the making of a spectacular, successful and sexy new production.
Wales Millennium Centre’s Christmas cabarets are a festive adult offering, taking a preexisting story and exploring it in a new, curious and inclusive way, using cabaret performance. Previous examples include: XXXmas Carol, The Lion, the B!tch and the Wardrobe and The First XXXmas: A Very Naughty-tivity.
We are looking for someone with an interest in and/or experience of cabaret performance who is looking to expand or extend their work at the mid scale. You will have experience working in the small scale, with some larger work, and be passionate about creating devised work with an eclectic company.
We’re open to what this partnership could look like, and welcome artists with a variety of working practices and skills.
Responsibilities:
- Working alongside Wales Millennium Centre’s in-house producing team to apply for additional funding to invest in the production
- Casting a group of diverse and exciting cabaret performers from an open call, in collaboration with the in-house producing team
- Facilitating R&D on the project in Autumn 2024
- Leading the company to write and/or facilitate devising of the production
- Directing the production to a high standard
- Agreeing a realistic schedule for the creation of the work in collaboration with the lead producer and production management
- Attendance at production meetings
Essential Requirements:
- A minimum of 3 years professional directing experience
- An understanding of or experience in cabaret performance styles
- A passion to work collaboratively in a devising process
- Live in Cardiff, or within commuting distance
Desirable Requirements:
- Experience of writing funding applications
- Experience of casting process
- Welsh speaking
Key dates
April – May: Creative development meetings and bid-writing, to be agreed around your schedule to a funding deadline in early May.
September – October: One week of R&D, exact dates to be agreed.
28 Oct – 4 Dec: Production rehearsals, tech and previews. Full availability required.
5 Dec: Press night.
Fees
A £1000 development fee to be paid on appointment for your time during the initial preparation and development period. Once external funding is secured, the below rates will apply.
£150 day rate during R&D.
£4000 directing fee.
