Public Art Call Out: Winter

Azadi by Naz Syed - Winter 2022

We are currently inviting applications from individuals, community groups and/or community arts organisations who are Wales based to create a large-scale installation to celebrate the Winter season.

The commission will include a large centrepiece in our Glanfa public space, an exhibition in our new Ffwrnais café-bar and a trail. We also welcome you to develop with additional funding, programmed activity to engage visitors with the installation – such as workshops or story sessions.

This is part of our Participatory Budgeting Programme where those who apply vote on each other’s pieces. The winner will receive the fee which covers their time and production costs. For more information see our summer call out.

Project Theme

During Christmas this year we want to create a magical and warm wintery experience for all our visitors.

We want you to create something enchanting and visually stunning that celebrates what the season means to you and pays homage to the theme of light and magic emerging from the darkness of winter. We want our visitors to feel a sense of warmth and joy, wonder and amazement.

We have done multiple call outs in this way with the wonderful Naz Syed of Ziba Creative being awarded last year’s Winter commission with her beautiful creation Azadi. Our current One Planet, One Chance exhibition has seen Otsi and Bubbles the orangutans designed by Wild Creation take pride of place in the Glanfa.

What is important to us?

We want to celebrate communities and showcase art, telling stories of people and cultures living in Wales. Participation and engagement is important to us so we would really like to see how you will be collaborating with others to create your piece of art.

What would we like you to include?

We love to encourage people to get involved in exploring what it is to be creative. As part of our exhibition programme, we would like to see how you could include participatory art activity over the Christmas period (separate budget) to ensure more people engage with your work and get the most from it.

We also love to involve people in design and planning of exhibitions, if you can show us how you can add this element, we would love to hear about it.

The most successful exhibitions hosted at Wales Millennium Centre have included trails that include children and their families. This summer, our 'One Planet, One Chance' art trail featured images of endangered animals made by young people who participated in sessions delivered by Well Wagon.

The fee

We have £8500 available, this will need to include the build and print of the trail, we are happy to discuss but expect you to make sure artists and groups are paid a fee for designs and creation of any work.

How to apply

We welcome applications from artists, individuals, community groups and arts organisations.

To apply we need you to send:

  • A written, video or audio description of your installation (Written descriptions should be no more than a side of A4)
