Radio Platfform is our youth-led radio station and training programme that gives young people a platform to build their confidence, find their voice and express their opinions.
It contains two core elements:
- A seven-week accredited course, in partnership with Promo Cymru and in collaboration with The Prince's Trust that takes place roughly every two months, culminating in a graduation ceremony.
- A youth-led radio station with support for young people to produce and present their own programmes that are broadcast on line and available as podcasts.
The course is aimed at 14-25-year-olds, but workshops are also offered to school and youth groups and can be catered to meet specific group requirements.
Hands on training
Participants can learn all aspects of radio production from presenting, to editing and producing, as well as creating content around other Centre initiatives such as Black History Month, the Tessitura Conference, Breakin the Bay, Foli Fest, Rawffest and Boomtown Fair.
During Festival of Voice 2018, our presenters racked up interviews with Billy Bragg, female rap collective, Daughters of Reykjavik from Iceland, New Orleans sensation, Tank & The Bangas, and Charlotte Church.
Since 2017 we’ve trained more than 80 young people and have more than 35 young people still delivering radio shows.
Our young presenters have also formed relationships with other radio stations across the country including Roundhouse Radio, Reprezent Radio, Radio Cardiff and BBC Radio Wales. DJ Bethan Elfyn is a welcome supporter of the Radio Platfform initiative.
Expanding the platfform
As the programme expands, so does the station. As part of our long-term partnership with Valleys Kids, a second radio studio was opened in Porth in 2019 allowing young people from the valleys to access Radio Platfform.
Our original studio has also undergone a full refurbishment complete with a mobile kit to take out to schools, groups and festivals.
