Community Lantern Parade 2021

Come along and join us for the 2021 Community Lantern Parade brought to you by Butetown Arts and Culture Association, Cardiff Council and ourselves.

The parade will also feature exciting light projections by Cardiff Council’s Child Friendly City Programme and Urban Projections.

We'd love you all take part in this year's lantern parade, along with local primary schools, Innovate Trust and Pedal Power, as we light up Lloyd George Avenue and Bute Street with paper lanterns, music and dance!

You’ll also have the chance to enjoy a showcase of mythical animations developed by Radnor Primary and Child Friendly Cardiff, as part of a project led by Urban Projections. The animations will be projected onto one of Butetown’s underpasses, giving people an immersive, sensory experience to remember.

Lantern building workshops

If you’d like to come along and take part, our half-term drop-in workshops are being run by Alice and Niki Fogarty and are open to everyone in the Glanfa foyer from 10am – 12pm, and 1pm – 3pm, from Monday 25 to Thursday 28 October.

Everyone taking part will receive a paper lantern to decorate in readiness for the parade on Thursday night so if you have a spare hour over half term, come along and join in the fun.

Parade night

On 28 October, we're asking people to congregate at Roald Dahl Plass at 6pm, before setting off at 6.30pm. Please wear warm, waterproof clothing and comfy shoes for walking, and don't forget your torch and lantern.

The parade will head down Lloyd George Avenue, under Letton Road underpass where you can stop to enjoy the animated projections created by Radnor Primary pupils, before returning down Bute Street. The entire route is approximately 1.3 miles, and the parade will last for approximately one hour, ending at around 7.30pm.

Accessible route

There is also a shorter, more accessible route available, which starts at the Letton Road underpass and joins up with the parade’s return along Bute Street.

The accessible route is approximately 0.7 miles and will last 30 mins. If you intend on joining the parade on the accessible route, please arrive at Letton Road underpass at 6.30pm, enjoy the projections and performances, and join in when the parade arrives.

At the end of the parade come and warm your cockles with a hot drink in Caffi.
