Music for the Fallen

27 October 2018

BBC Hoddinott Hall

As part of nationwide events marking the centenary of the end of the First World War, Adrian Partington conducts the first complete performance of Mass Via Victrix (1914-1918) by Charles Villiers Stanford.

Completed in 1919 it was Stanford’s personal commentary on the war - written to celebrate victory and commemorate the fallen - the concert is completed by Ravel’s Tombeau de Couperin and music by F.S.Kelly, who wrote a poignant work in memory of his friend who was killed at Gallipoli, before sadly later dying in battle himself.
