In 2016 Theatre versus Oppression (TVO) in partnership with Wales Millennium Centre and The Wallich began a groundbreaking project.
The project worked with a group of vulnerable adults who had suffered a range of traumas and who had all experienced homelessness and the traumas stigma that goes with it. This project looked at offering participants a chance to not only find their voice but to have a platform from which to express it, while simultaneously learning about all aspects of Theatre production. The project culminated in a one-off production designed, staged and put together by the group.
The premise of Behind the Label was to show the public that we are all more than the labels society has given us; that we all have a story to tell and have the right to find our voice and be heard.
The group was formed of people who had suffered homelessness, addictions, abuse and mental health issues. The fact that they had been judged and dismissed by society was the one thing they all shared in common.
The success of the project and the effect it had on participants and public alike led to the decision to run the project as an annual event with a performance by a new group each year. So December 2018 will see the return of Behind the Label with an original and exciting new performance which will both challenge and entertain audiences, as a new ensemble seek to find their voice and tell their stories: fighting for their right to be heard.
