Sorrows of the Somme is a moving choral and orchestral response to English, Welsh and German writings on the battle for Mametz Wood where almost 4,000 Welsh soldiers lost their lives or were wounded in the first days of the Battle of the Somme in July 1916.
Composed by Brian Hughes
With a libretto based on writings from the First World War
and a new lyric by Dr Rowan Williams
With the National Youth Choir of Wales, C.Ô.R and National Youth Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Gareth Jones
A special performance supported by Arts Council of Wales, Welsh Government and Cymru’n Cofio Wales Remembers
Performed by today’s generation of young people, Sorrows of the Somme is the concluding artistic event of the four-year programme that has marked Cymru’n Cofio Wales Remembers 1914-18 - and one that will poignantly remind us of the vulnerability and spirit of those that Wales lost in the First World War.
