The Emperor of China is enchanted by the song of The Nightingale, but the introduction of a mechanical version is no substitute and the Emperor becomes ill. Only when the real Nightingale returns does he realise that the true emotion of music cannot be imitated and he is restored to health.
Hans Christian Andersen’s tale is believed to have been inspired by the author’s unrequited love for soprano, Jenny Lind who was known as ‘Sweden’s Nightingale’. In collaboration with Blind Summit, the internationally renowned puppet-based theatre company, this charming fairy-tale opera will be brought to life by eight singers, 11 puppeteers and a cast of fabulous life-sized puppets. Stravinsky’s sweeping score will be conducted by WNO Music Director, Tomáš Hanus.
Sung in Russian, with English and Welsh surtitles
Running time: approximately 50 minutes
