As part of our Your Voice community art exhibition that will be open to the public from July – August 2021, we've commissioned a local artist to create an enormous, crocheted tree on our Donald Gordon Theatre stage.
We are holding these community workshops to create artwork that will be hung on the tree and become part of one of the exhibition’s centre pieces. All participants will be credited at the exhibition for their creations.
Making instruments: 14 + 21 June 2021, 2pm – 4pm
Suitable for all ages.
Making instruments from recycled plastic, cardboard and other materials. Instruments will be covered with either leaves, fabric, tissue paper, papier maché and or macrame embellishment.
Making Ragdolls: 24 June 2021, 10am – 3pm
Suitable for all ages but children will need adult supervision.
With an hour for lunch between 12pm – 1pm.
Hand sewing ragdolls for adults and children using Hessian and Raffia.
Styrofoam Creatures: 16 + 23 June 2021, 10am – 12pm
Suitable for all ages.
Making one (or more) bird/animal/fish/hybrid creature to hang on the Weaving Tree. Participants will create a creature on Styrofoam which will then be used to print their designs on to paper with inks.
Leaves & Seeds: 19 + 26 June 2021, 10.30am – 11.30am
Suitable for 5-7 years old (with adult supervision).
This workshop aims to encourage children to engage and chat about trees. Simple outline drawings of acorns, conkers, ‘helicopter’ seeds, hazel nuts, apples, pears, plums and different leaf shapes will be introduced to the session to prompt answers and then be used as a starting point for making artworks for the Weaving Tree.
Felt Flowers: 19 + 26 June 2021, 1pm – 3pm
Suitable for 10yrs – adults.
Each participant will have the chance to make a large felt flower, which can be as simple or exotic as you fancy. As felt needs to be sewn rather than glued, this workshop will support participants with their sewing skills – everyone’s welcome to this relaxed session, from complete beginners to experienced.
Giving Memories a Voice: 16 + 23 June 2021, 2pm – 4pm
Suitable for teens and adults.
A writing workshop for recalling memories, particularly happy ones. This relaxed and friendly workshop will include chatting about childhood memories, word association games and freewriting. Memories are personal but if you would like to include your written words in the tree project, they can be tied with a ribbon ready to suspend from a branch of the Weaving Tree.
