Whether you're a dancer, rapper, actor or storyteller, this course will guide you through the core components of Breakdancing, Graffiti, DJing and Emceeing.
Course Objectives
- Dive into the four main elements of Hip Hop culture and their influence on contemporary performance.
- Learn the basics of breaking (breakdancing) and incorporate rhythm, flow and improvisation into your physical storytelling.
- Explore the art of emceeing and develop skills in freestyling, lyricism and spoken word to create dynamic narratives on stage.
- Experiment with graffiti as a medium of visual expression, discovering how it can be used to communicate ideas and themes in your theatre work.
- Work in groups to develop a Hip Hop-infused theatre piece, blending music, movement and storytelling in new and innovative ways.
Course Highlights
- Hands-on Workshops: Engage in practical sessions with experts from the Hip-Hop community – breakers, DJs, emcees and visual artists – who will share their craft and insights.
- Creative Collaboration: Co-create original pieces of Hip-Hop theatre incorporating all the elements learned throughout the course.

Who is this for?
We’re looking for rappers, actors, DJs, dancers, singers and poets aged 14–25 who are looking to explore this unique opportunity to develop Hip-Hop theatre and feed into the Next Up Company. Whether you are experienced in Hip-Hop or have a passion for performing and storytelling with a willingness to push creative boundaries, this course is for you.
When is it?
The course runs every Tuesday evening, 6pm to 8pm, from 7 January to 27 May (no sessions on 15, 22 and 29 April) with a showcase of work on 3 June. There is also an opportunity to attend our Dros Nos event and see the Next Up Company’s Hip-Hop theatre performance.
