Lead Facilitator: Grace Springer

Grace is a photographer working across documentary and portraiture, using photography as a way of preserving memories, traditions and people that are often underrepresented. Her work centres on communities and individuals who may not have traditionally had the access or means to document their own lives, and she is interested in how photography can act as both record and care. Much of her practice is rooted in community, particularly within Butetown, where she has developed projects predominantly with the Caribbean community. She is passionate about documenting lived experience and creating space for heritage, storytelling and connection.

Grace has created two LGBTQIA+ photographic books exploring gender and sexuality, and her work has been exhibited at Centrespace (Bristol), St Fagans’ online collection, Ffotogallery, Bradford City of Culture, and Africa Foto Fair. Alongside her practice, she has organised and led workshops with EYST, Ffotogallery, PWSH, Butetown Community Centre and Shutter Studios, and has worked in both community and gallery settings supporting projects rooted in collaboration, trust and shared authorship.

This approach is closely tied to her lived experience of growing up in a lower socio-economic background, where moments, stories and histories were rarely formally preserved. Studying Photojournalism and later a Master’s in Graphic Communications gave her access to educational support that profoundly shaped both her practice and career. As someone from a working-class background, navigating ethnicity and learning needs, sharing her skills with communities who face similar barriers is central to her work and something she is deeply committed to.
