Living Talisman: Motanka Brought to Life

Performance

30 January 2026

Cabaret

The Ukrainian Community of Wales and Wales Millennium Centre invite you to a unique cultural event – a visual-theatrical performance and hands-on craft workshop exploring traditional Slavic protective talismans known as motanky.

Immerse yourself in the symbolic world of Ukrainian folk dolls through a captivating synthesis of theatre, dance, music and video projection. Our performers of various generations, including young Ukrainian girls now living in Wales, will bring talisman dolls to life, representing protection, prosperity, motherhood, travel and marriage.

After the performance, the Cabaret bar will be open so you can enjoy authentic Ukrainian treats.

Interactive Craft Workshop

Create your own motanka under the guidance of experienced craftswoman Olena Ponomarenko! Learn about the cultural significance and protective symbolism of these traditional talismans.

Workshop invitations will be sent to ticket holders early in the new year. Please watch your inbox for details on how to secure your spot.
Start time: 6pm
Age guidance: 11+
Duration: 45min

This is a unique opportunity to introduce Welsh audiences to Ukraine's rich cultural heritage through live art and collaborative creativity. Join us for a dialogue between cultures, where Ukrainian and Welsh traditions intertwine through the shared symbolism of protective talismans.

This event is part of the Cultural Celebration Call-Out, supported by Wales Millennium Centre. Free admission with advance registration.
