The Boy With Two Hearts was based on the book by Hamed Amiri, and adapted for the stage by Phil Porter in collaboration with Hamed and Hessam Amiri. It was performed in our Weston Studio in October 2021.

In 2000, the Amiri family fled Afghanistan after facing persecution from the Taliban, with their journey made even more critical by their eldest son Hussein’s life-threatening heart condition.

Their extraordinary true story is one of hope, from Afghanistan to Wales. It revealed the courage and humanity behind each refugee story, showing that hope and a sense of home can be found in the most unlikely places.

For our first production after re-opening in 2021 and the first Welsh refugee story brought to the stage, we were thrilled to have sell-out shows and rave reviews. Meet the cast.

We also created an immersive VR experience to accompany the production in collaboration with Hamed and Hessam Amiri to honour their brother’s incredible life.

Ripples of Kindness invited small groups into the family 'sofra' to share in the positive impact that Hussein had on everyone around him, from Afghanistan to Wales.

We caught up with brothers Hamed and Hessam Amiri to chat about their journey into the world of theatre production, and getting their family's extraordinary story, The Boy with Two Hearts, from page to stage.

Following its sell-out opening season in 2021, this Wales Millennium Centre production returned to Cardiff for one week in September 2022, prior to its transfer to London's National Theatre.
