Earth Day 2024

As a large organisation with an annual footfall of 1.8 million, we know that our operations and activities have an impact on the environment.

Lowering our carbon emissions is one of our core priorities over the next few years. To mark Earth Day 2024 on 22 April, here are just some of the proactive ways we are doing our bit to help the planet:

  • In 2021 we installed 720 solar panels on our roof. Since then, they have generated 440MWh of green electricity, avoiding 290 tonnes of CO2, which is equivalent to:

- travelling around the world 56 times in a compact car

- planting 23,255 trees to extract CO2 over 10 years

They also generate more than enough energy to power our Donald Gordon Theatre stage for the next 25 years.

  • 75% of our lighting is energy efficient LEDs, saving us 60% of energy
  • 98% of our tickets sales are now digital, reducing our need for paper tickets
  • We recycled 70% of our furniture on completion of our new office spaces by changing tabletops and chair covers, rather than replacing old for new.

Our other initiatives include reusing our sets and recycling them where possible to avoid disposal, reducing waste by using biodegradable containers and making sure that any replacement equipment we buy has a better energy rating than the previous, meaning that we are constantly improving our energy usage.
