Lord Rowe-Beddoe sadly passed away in November 2023. Read more about the founding pioneer of Wales Millennium Centre in a statement by our managing director Mat Milsom.

 

Chairman of Wales Millennium Centre from March 2001 to May 2010, Lord Rowe-Beddoe is an international businessman with a considerable track record of public service and work for the performing arts.

He was himself a music scholar at Llandaff Cathedral School before continuing his formal education at Stowe, St John’s College Cambridge, and Harvard University.

His love of the theatre started in childhood (his mother was a professional opera singer) and continued through university where he was recognised as an accomplished actor (both amateur and professional).

Lord Rowe-Beddoe is Chairman of the Representative Body of the Church in Wales, and a Deputy Chair of the UK Statistics Authority. He is a Patron of the Prince's Trust Bro, and President (formerly Chairman) of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

His current non-executive board appointments include EHC International Ltd (since 2001) and Toye & Co. plc (since 2003).

Previously he was Chairman of the Welsh Development Agency (1993-2001); Chairman of the Development Board for Rural Wales (1994-1998); with Thomas De La Rue from 1961 and Chief Executive between 1971 and 1976; with Revlon Inc as President, Latin America, Europe, Middle East and Africa (1976-1981); and President, Morgan Stanley-GFTA Ltd (1983-1991).

Lord Rowe-Beddoe is Pro Chancellor of the University of Glamorgan; an Honorary Doctor of the University of Wales and of the University of Glamorgan; an Honorary Fellow of the University of Cardiff, the University of Wales College, Newport, the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff and Aberystwyth University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

He was knighted in 2000 for his services to industry and economic development in Wales. In 2006 he was elevated to the peerage.
