Learn how to tell your story in words and pictures in this free course.

Comics are unique. It's the only art form where you can be your own director, camera operator, actor, and scriptwriter, using tools as simple as a pencil and paper. From deeply personal diary comic strips to epic sci-fi graphic novels, the possibilities are endless!

In this course, you’ll be introduced to the parts of a comic and taught ways in which stories can be told visually. We’ll examine the process of comics production, from script to finished page. Using a variety of techniques, you’ll create short comic strips and finish the course with a two page comic of your own.

We’ll also discuss the business of comics, selling your graphic novel and the ways in which you can share your work – digitally, physically, and beyond.
All skill levels are welcome. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a confident artist, if you’re curious about comics and want to find new ways to tell stories, this course is for you.

Who is teaching the course?

Sarah Millman is a comic artist and writer with a background in illustration and animation. She graduated from Bristol UWE with a degree in Illustration in 2011, and after that completed a Masters in Animation at the University of Glamorgan in 2012. Since then she’s worked as a freelance artist, with clients from the comics and games industries.

She’s best known for her independent comic series, NPC Tea, which was crowdfunded on Kickstarter in 2020. As well as selling her work at conventions and events across the country, she also teaches comics workshops at universities and libraries for children and adults of all ages. She loves introducing people to the comics world and helping artists of all skill levels tell stories.
