Our Valentine's (and Anti-Valentine's) Gift Ideas

It’s that time of year again. Love hearts adorn shop windows and people ponder the power of the love spoon. Are Valentine’s and St Dwynwen’s Day just corporate events, or are they a moment to say, boldly and openly, I love you? Whatever your relationship status, sometimes it feels good to show the ones you love how much you appreciate them.

Whether it’s your “better half”, your best friends, or even yourself (solo theatre trips truly are one the finest acts of self-love), we have the perfect way to express your love. You can choose to be swept away in the romance, weep at the heartbreak or avoid the traditional concepts of love entirely – we have something for everyone (with prices that’ll make you swoon, if we do say so ourselves <3).

BONNIE & CLYDE

If you’re a fan of true crime, new musicals and iconic love, then be one of the first to enjoy the latest offering from London’s West End, Bonnie & Clyde. Winner of Best New Musical (What’sOnStage Awards 2023), the smash-hit Bonnie & Clyde brings the infamous story to Cardiff.

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS - Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures

Cinema has shared some of the most memorable love stories of all time, but none may be as unique as Edward Scissorhands. The remarkable Matthew Bourne presents his magical dance production, based on the classic Tim Burton movie and featuring the hauntingly beautiful music of Danny Elfman and Terry Davies, of this witty, bittersweet story of an incomplete boy left alone in a strange new world. This is a spectacle not to be missed.

AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN

Set to a smash-hit soundtrack featuring the songs of Madonna, Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Blondie, and many more, the power of music will carry you through the highs and lows of their extraordinary love story, including the award-winning (Love Lift Us) Up Where We Belong.

BUFFY REVAMPED

Sometimes love can be complicated… especially if you’re a centuries old, enigmatic vampire from London, and the person you adore is a slayer, destined to rid the earth of creatures such as yourself. Through seven seasons, including the definitive musical episode, Buffy the Vampire Slayer became a cult classic, but have you ever wondered what it would be like to rewatch it from Spike’s point-of-view?

Well, wonder no more. Buffy Revamped is a fast-paced gem that brings you the entire 144 episodes of the hit 90s TV show in 70 minutes(!), as told through the eyes of the one person who knows it inside out… Spike. This might just be the most alternative love story you’ll see this year.

CARRIE HOPE FLETCHER – LOVE LETTERS

In October you can watch one of the UK’s most remarkable performers. Carrie Hope Fletcher - Love Letters will see the musical theatre star explore all forms of love; from romantic to maternal, unrequited to obsessive, showcased through a composition of stunning musical theatre classics. Don't miss this wonderfully intimate concert that promises to warm and break your heart in equal measure.

PONTYPOOL

If horror and being scared is more your thing, our next Wales Millennium Centre production PONTYPOOL is inspired by the 2008 cult film which turned the zombie genre on its head. Radio DJ Grant Mazzy was once king of the airwaves, but his big mouth and even bigger ego have reduced him to a washed-up star. Forced to leave the national stations behind, he finds himself at Beacon Radio, Pontypool’s little-known station.

On a snowy St Dwynwen’s Day, Mazzy and his team settle in for another breakfast show, but things take a disturbing turn when muddled reports come in of an outbreak of riots and babbling crowds in the town.

Can Mazzy remain on air to make sense of it all, or will Pontypool fall silent?

& FINALLY…

& Juliet

What list of romances could ever be complete without the ultimate star-crossed love… actually - what if theatrical history was rewritten? What if Shakespeare wrote a different ending? What if Juliet… lived?

Created by the Emmy-winning writer from “Schitt’s Creek,” this hilarious new musical flips the script on the greatest love story ever told and asks, what would happen next if Juliet didn’t end it all over Romeo? Juliet’s new story bursts to life through a playlist of pop anthems, including Baby One More Time, Roar, Since U Been Gone, It’s My Life, Can’t Stop the Feeling and more — all from Max Martin, the genius songwriter/producer behind more #1 hits than any other artist this century, and his collaborators.

Coming in 2025. But it’ll be worth the wait… trust us.

There’s always plenty more to explore in our programme - from world class opera to West End musicals to raucous, delectable delights in Cabaret. Share the gift of theatre with someone you love. Caru ti.
