Choreographer Mark Morris, hailed as the “the most successful and influential choreographer alive, and indisputably the most musical” (New York Times) returns to Cardiff with Pepperland, a unique tribute to The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
“A gorgeously entertaining and witty tribute to the classic Beatles album”
Pepperland features an original score by Ethan Iverson, performed by a live chamber music ensemble. Elaborating on Sgt. Pepper’s non-rock and roll influences, arrangements of songs from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band including With a Little Help From My Friends, When I’m Sixty-Four and Penny Lane, are interspersed with six Pepper-inspired original pieces intended especially to complement Mark Morris’ profound understanding of classical forms: Allegro, Scherzo, Adagio, and the blues.
“A truly joyous, celebratory work of art. A brilliant homage to one of the great rock albums.”
In this exuberant new dance work, visually on the cusp of Carnaby Street and Woodstock, Pepperland teases out the album’s colourfully avant-garde heart and eccentric charm, with the playful and joyous originality that Mark Morris Dance Group is famous for.
“The choreography is deft and nuanced, at times skimming across the music's bright surface, at times digging deeper. ”
