Five reasons to spend a night at the musicals

This June, in a night of unashamed showbiz glitz and glamour, David Mahoney returns with an all-star cast and The Novello Orchestra, whose trademark passion and charisma has made it one of the finest show orchestras in the UK.

Here's David's take on why you can't afford to miss A Night at the Musicals on 23 June 2019 in the Donald Gordon Theatre.

1. See the stars of the West End and Broadway

I'll be hosting some of the leading singers from the West End and Broadway on the famous Donald Gordon Theatre stage, for one amazing concert.

Joining me are: Olivier-Award winning David Thaxton, who has just played the role of the Phantom in the West End production of Phantom of the Opera; John Owen-Jones, whose performances as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables have been voted the best of all time; winner of the BBC’s Over the Rainbow show, Danielle Hope; and leading lady Kerry Ellis, whose numerous roles include Wicked’s Elphaba in the West End and on Broadway.

2. Hear amazing songs from the best-loved musicals

A Night at the Musicals will feature 26 songs from 20 different musicals!

From Wicked to Les Misérables, Chicago to Phantom of the Opera, our all-star cast of amazing guest singers will take on some of the best-loved moments of musical theatre, in a night of unashamed showbiz glitz and glamour.

3. The Novello Orchestra

The Novello Orchestra’s trademark passion and charisma has made it one of the finest show orchestras in the UK. Their memorable performances, under the baton of David Mahoney, have thrilled and inspired audiences and performers alike.

From sleek, shimmering strings to the razzmatazz of Big Band-style brass and a driving rhythm section, the orchestra is as much the star of the show as the singers it performs with.

Besides the well-known musical showstoppers, The Novello Orchestra is also one of the world’s leading film music ensembles, with recent Film with Live Orchestra tours including Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, La La Land, Star Wars and Pixar in Concert.

4. Party Time

A Night at the Musicals is an ‘I was there’ moment. It’s much more than just a concert. It’s a night of pure entertainment from start to finish, with a few surprises along the way. Dancing and singing along is very much encouraged and good fun is guaranteed!

5. The First of Many

Lucie Jones

This show is just the first in a series of three concerts that The Novello Orchestra is performing here this season.

November sees Lucie Jones, Noel Sullivan, Connie Fisher and Ian ‘H’ Watkins take to the stage for ‘Movie Mixtape: Songs from the Silver Screen’, where the red carpet is rolled out for an evening of movie magic, featuring the most iconic songs from famous films.

And in March 2020, we get into the groove with ‘Heart and Soul’, celebrating all things Soul, RnB and Motown.
