Lantern Parade 2023: When the Kings Came

12 December 2023

Glanfa

Curated by Reverend Owen James, Wales Millennium Centre Chaplain, and delivered in partnership with the Senedd.

Join us for an evening of song, soup and Christmas cheer.

We would like to welcome you to the Glanfa for a celebration of Christmas on Tuesday 12 December from 4.30pm where we will listen to carols and performances. We will be joined by St Paul’s School Choir, St Mary’s School Choir and Wales Millennium Centre’s Volunteer Choir.

At 5.30pm we will leave Wales Millennium Centre to walk in a lantern parade led by Butetown Arts and Culture Association who will be creating a new performance just for the event.

“The parade performance will draw inspiration from a Jamaican Junkanoo masked pantomime, which, in turn, has been influenced by West African and European traditions. For instance, Junkanoo incorporates archetype characters like 'Horsehead,' reminiscent of the Mari Lwyd tradition in Wales. The ensemble will consist of approximately 12 dancers, drummers and other musicians, all adorned in newly commissioned costumes for the performance.”

Please bring a lantern to join us on a beautiful journey through the Oval Basin up to the Norwegian Church and back to the Senedd steps. We will enjoy performances from Pantasia Steel Band and join in some audience carols before returning to Wales Millennium Centre to listen to Cambrensis Choir, and we will join in for carols with our pianist and choir leader Meilyr Geraint Rees.

If you are unable to make a lantern, we will be running workshops at Wales Millennium Centre from 4pm on the evening. The Senedd would also love to welcome you on 9 December between 12pm and 3pm for a workshop with artists Alice and Niki Fogaty, who will be creating the crowns to represent the Kings.
