To celebrate Windrush Day 2020 we wanted to highlight the wonderful work of one of our Community Ambassadors, Roma Taylor.
Roma volunteers for us and helps local people attend shows here by spreading the word and sharing access to our community ticketing offers.
She’s also been working with us to see how we can diversify our artistic programme – coming on trips, posing (challenging but fabulous) questions and making sure we continue to represent Black and Ethnically diverse communities in everything that we do.
‘I love the access to tickets that we can share with family and friends who wouldn’t be able to afford it otherwise. For £5 it's a blessing.’Roma
Roma arrived Wales aged 15 from the Caribbean. As a trained nurse she served as a medic in the Territorial Army whilst raising a family in Cardiff.
Now aged 76 she’s leading the Windrush Cymru Elders group at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
Day-to-day, Roma plans activities and trips out for the group who are all 50+ and campaigns tirelessly to make sure that the needs of elders in Wales are met by local authorities and government. She also continues to make sure people are educated about the diverse communities we have here in Wales.
A keen theatre, goer Roma loves song and dance and just before lockdown visited the Bristol Old Vic to see Rush A Joyous Jamaican Journey and was thrilled to relive the songs of her youth.
It’s people like Roma and our other community members that make us make us even more committed to continuing our work in Butetown, with the Carnival team and to one day bringing these incredible songs and stories to our stages.
As one of our Community Ambassadors, Roma continues to connect her family, friends and other elders to the Centre and is a regular face at our community banquets.
So, today is a celebration and a massive thank you to Roma for her amazing energy and commitment to her work here and to all of the Windrush Generation for their contributions to Butetown, Cardiff, Wales and the UK.
Roma is also supporting Race Council Cymru’s Windrush 2020 live celebrations which you can watch on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
