Wales Millennium Centre produced a new version of Manfred Karge’s Man to Man translated by award-winning playwright Alexandra Wood and performed by Maggie Bain.
Man to Man tells the story of Ella, a woman forced to adopt the identity of her dead husband to survive in Nazi Germany.
Compromising her own identity for survival, Ella is plunged into a new masculine world of beer, schnapps and poker; a claustrophobic existence dominated by the fear of discovery and the changing face of authority in a volatile twentieth century Germany.
This poignant reimagining of Manfred Karge’s one-woman show premièred in the Weston Studio in February 2015.
After its first showing the play embarked on a nationwide tour and an appearance in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival later that year.
It was successfully revived in September 2017 for an eight-week tour including London and New York.
In this video from Brooklyn Academy of Music actress Maggie Bain provides commentary on a memorable scene from the Next Wave 2017 presentation of Man to Man.
