We believe positive representation matters, so much so that we wanted to showcase some of the inspiring people from the global majority doing amazing work here in Cardiff.

Join us for an event that will challenge your thinking, open up a conversation and motivate you to be excellent too. You never know, you might hear some great ideas worth spreading.

Speakers

Bianca Ali - Assistant Director / Activist

Bianca Ali is an aspiring assistant producer, activist, and writer. Her credits include assistant producer of the NTW production of ‘Circle of Fifths’ held in June 2022 at Dance House. Bianca was also the lead member of the Black Lives Matter movement, calling on the Welsh government and organisations to revise their current EDI policies to make Wales an anti-racist nation. She is a talented spoken word artist and has organised many events to give poets and artists a platform. As a result of her creative talent Bianca, was a member of the Ladies of Rage’s event entitled Harddwch Du, co-writing and performing The Struggle is Real.

Chantelle Haughton - DARPL Director/Educator

Chantelle Haughton - DARPL Director (Welsh Government National initiative for Pan-Wales Diversity and Anti-Racist Professional Learning led by partners with lived and professional experience), is a National Teaching Fellow, Principal Lecturer in Early Years Education, Cardiff Met University, Senior Fellow (SFHEA). Chantelle founded and co-ordinates The CMet Outdoor Learning Centre. Chantelle is Chair Welsh Government Anti Racist Wales Action Plan Early Years, Childcare and Play Steering Group, Member Ministerial Working Group for Black Asian and Minority Ethnic Histories and Cynefin in Curriculum for Wales, former-Chair Black History Wales Management Committee (2020-22), Vice Chair BAMEed Wales Network, Deputy Chair Race Equality Charter task group at Cardiff Met and Vice Chair Early Years Network Wales.

Specialist in the area of Purpose Driven Leadership, Mindset, Vision and strategic Thinking, Emotional Intelligence and leading and managing Diversity & Inclusion at senior management level across a broad range of organisations in the UK, Europe, USA and Africa.

Mariyah Zaman - Creative Director/Founder of Now In A Minute Media

Mariyah Zaman, is a BA (Hons) Creative Writing & Media Graduate from Cardiff Metropolitan University and the co-founder and creative director of Now In A Minute Media, an online Welsh Muslim media platform championing Welsh Muslim voices and encouraging participation amongst Muslims in creative industries Mariyah is a social media coordinator by profession and a freelance writer whose work ranges from poetry to news articles and features with a passion for exploring Muslim youth culture and fashion.

Michael Adeniya - COO Black Business Week UK

Michael Adeniya is a commercially focused, award-winning B2B events strategist. He is currently the Chief Operating Officer of UK Black Business Week, the largest event in the UK and Europe for Black entrepreneurs, career professionals and allies to the Black community. In his previous role as the Portfolio Director of Clarion Events life science division, he spearheaded almost 10x revenue growth over an 8 year tenure, introducing multiple revenue streams and international product launches across Europe, Asia and America.

Rachel Clarke - Deputy Headteacher

Rachel is the founder of Apex Educate, co-founder of Promote Equality and Deputy Head Teacher of a inner-London school. Rachel is a core DARPL Team member, having created the Senior Leader and Governor series of Professional Learning for Wales. Rachel works with schools, educational settings and companies that are seeking to become anti-racist and work towards racial justice being realised. Rachel's ability to train all levels of staff in anti-racism has developed people's understanding of equity and has supported them on their anti-racist journey.

Ricardo Erasmus - Mentor & Life Coach

Ricardo Erasmus, a former semi-pro soccer player, originally from Cape Town, Mitchell's Plain, South Africa. He is a Transformational Life Coach, Youth mentor, Motivational Speaker, and Radio Presenter with over two decades of experience in youth work in Cape Town, the USA, and the UK. He shares his story of resilience and determination growing up on the Cape Flats and inspires others to reach their full potential by shifting their mindset and striving for success against all odds. He is a passionate advocate for mentorship and is dedicated to helping others reach their highest potential.

Shavanah Taj - General Secretary

Shavanah Taj is Wales TUC’s first BME General Secretary. She joined Wales TUC in February 2019 from the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), where she had been the Welsh Secretary since 2013, having served as national union official since 2012. Shavanah is a passionate campaigner and can often be found contributing speeches at round table debates and protest marches on issues such as anti-racism, human rights, women’s rights, fair pay, fair work and creating an equitable, sustainable green economy that delivers positive, long lasting changes for workers and the communities in which they live and work.

Sy Joshua - Race Equality Specialist/Videographer

Sy uses the power of storytelling to inform, persuade and challenge organisations towards an anti-racist future. South Wales born and based, Sy has worked extensively in multiple settings leading Welsh Government award winning national and international projects that tackle exclusion and improve access for young people and adults in areas of employment, education and health. Formerly Head of Operations at the UK based charity Race Equality First, Sy worked closely with people who experienced race discrimination and used their personal experiences to assist organisations in understanding the importance of addressing systemic racism in the workplace. Sy now leads on the delivery of anti-racist interventions influencing positive change at the RSPB. Sy sits on the Criminal Justice Board for Wales Independent Oversight Panel addressing the systemic discrimination and disadvantages experienced.

Yusuf Ibrahim - Educator

Yusuf Ibrahim is a prominent educational leader in Wales. He is passionate about enhancing the leadership prospects for people from all walks of life, particularly those from under-represented backgrounds. One of the most senior minority-ethnic leaders in the public sector, Yusuf has worked at national level, contributing to the design and delivery of assessments during the pandemic. He is currently leading a ground-breaking Anti-Racism Curriculum Project across the colleges sector as well as leading significant curriculum & digital areas within one of the largest colleges in the UK, Cardiff & Vale College. A digital transformer, Yusuf is determined to ensure that new technologies are an enabler for positive change, allowing more people to access opportunities to learn and progress. A values-based leader, Yusuf's journey has taken him across London, Bristol & Cardiff, building supportive teams to meet the needs of learners, staff, and communities.
